New Delhi: A Delhi court has remanded four Youth Congress workers, who took off their shirts and protested at the AI Summit, to five days of police custody. These IYC workers had taken off their shirts and protested at the AI Impact Summit over the India-US trade agreement.
Judicial Magistrate Ravi of Patiala House Court remanded Bihar Youth Congress National Secretary Krishna Hari, Bihar Youth Congress State Secretary Kundan Yadav, Uttar Pradesh Youth Congress President Ajay Kumar, and Telangana Youth Congress leader Narasimha Yadav to police custody for questioning.
Custody Needed to Recover Phones
Seeking custody of the accused, the police argued that they had raised anti-national slogans at the event venue and worn T-shirts with objectionable images of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The police stated that this was a "serious" wrongdoing, as an attempt was made to obstruct the police, resulting in injuries to three people. The police further claimed that their custody was needed to recover the accused's mobile phones. The police also claimed that the purpose of the custodial interrogation was to uncover the "conspiracy" behind the protest, the source of funding, and the printing location of the T-shirts worn by the accused.
Lawyer's Argument: Peaceful Protest
The lawyer representing the Youth Congress workers objected to the police custody request. He argued that the arrested youth were affiliated with a political party and had exercised their democratic right to peaceful protest. He said that the arrest of the protesters had "greatly undermined the dignity of democracy."
