New Delhi: Following the conclusion of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026, the South African team is touring New Zealand, where an exciting five-match T20 series is being contested between the two sides. The first match of the series was played today—March 15—at the Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui. South Africa secured a one-sided victory in this match. The visiting team defeated the Kiwis by 7 wickets, thereby avenging their defeat in the semi-finals of the 2026 T20 World Cup.
It is pertinent to mention that the first semi-final of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 was played between New Zealand and South Africa in Kolkata on March 4. New Zealand had won that match by 9 wickets. However, in this opening match of the current T20 series, South Africa completely dominated the proceedings.
New Zealand Team Bundled Out for 91 Runs
In the first T20 of the series, New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner won the toss and elected to bat first. However, this decision proved to be entirely incorrect. The Kiwi team was bundled out for a mere 91 runs in just 14.3 overs. James Neesham was the top scorer with 26 runs; apart from him, no other player managed to score 20 runs or more. For South Africa, Ncobani Mokoena was the most successful bowler, claiming three wickets. He was also awarded the 'Player of the Match' title. Additionally, Gerald Coetzee, Ottniel Baartman, and captain Keshav Maharaj each took two wickets.
South Africa Chase Down Target with 20 Balls to Spare
South Africa successfully chased down the target of 92 runs with 20 balls and seven wickets to spare. South Africa achieved this target in just 16.4 overs. Connor Esterhuizen top-scored for South Africa with 45 runs; he remained unbeaten. Dian Forrester also remained not out, scoring 16 runs. For New Zealand, Kyle Jamieson, Zachary Foulkes, and Mitchell Santner each claimed one wicket. The second match of the series will now be played on March 17.
