UK bars US from using bases for Iran strike, draws Trump criticismLondon: The US, poised to attack Iran, has suffered a major setback. According to The Times, the United Kingdom has refused to allow the US to use British military bases for a potential attack against Iran. This decision has escalated tensions between the US and the United Kingdom. US President Donald Trump has criticized the UK for this.
No permission to use British military bases
The Times reports that, under previous agreements, US aircraft can operate from RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire and Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean only with prior approval from the British government. However, Britain has not granted this permission for any hypothetical action against Iran. Britain has stated that participating in an attack without a clear legal basis could violate international law.
Trump Criticizes Britain
Trump criticized the United Kingdom's decision. He also attacked the United Kingdom's 2025 agreement, which transferred sovereignty over the British Indian Ocean Territory, including Diego Garcia and the Chagos Islands, to Mauritius. On his Truthout social platform, he warned that "the United States may need to use its airfields in Diego Garcia and Fairford to deter a potential attack by a very unstable and dangerous government."
Trump is furious over the Chagos Islands
The controversy erupted when Trump discussed his ultimatum on Iran's nuclear program with Prime Minister Keir Starmer. The following day, Trump publicly linked his criticism of the Chagos deal to Britain's potential role in any US military action. He suggested that UK support would be legal under international law, claiming that Iran could attack the UK and its allies.
