Washington: The US military, currently engaged in a conflict with Iran, is grappling with a funding shortage. The Department of Defense has requested an additional $200 billion in funding from Congress to sustain the war against Iran, as Congress holds the sole authority to approve any new appropriations. This constitutes a substantial sum—one that is bound to face scrutiny and questions from Congress. Speaking on condition of anonymity to the news agency AP, a senior official within the Trump administration revealed that the Pentagon has submitted this request to the White House.
Hegseth: "America Is Winning"
When asked about this specific figure on Thursday, US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth did not offer a direct confirmation, noting instead that the amount could be subject to change. Hegseth remarked that funds are necessary to "kill the bad guys." He added, "We are going back to Congress—to our people there—to ensure that we secure adequate funding."
Meanwhile, addressing the conflict with Iran, Hegseth asserted that the campaign is "ahead of schedule" and that "America is winning." He dismissed suggestions that the US is becoming bogged down in a quagmire in the war against Iran. An official familiar with the matter indicated that the request is currently under review at the White House and has not yet received President Trump's approval.
Preparing for a Protracted War Against Iran
According to the Congressional Budget Office, if approved, this supplementary spending bill would represent the largest legislative expenditure since the COVID-19 relief bill of 2020.
It remains entirely unclear whether such a spending measure will garner the necessary political support. Given the magnitude of the sum involved, it signals that Trump may be preparing for a prolonged conflict against Iran. This could prove challenging for Trump, who has consistently criticized his presidential predecessors, arguing that they entangled the United States in never-ending wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Why might Trump face difficulties in securing funding?
Although Trump's Republican Party controls both the House of Representatives and the Senate, the path to securing funding is not straightforward. Many conservative lawmakers adopt a very strict stance regarding government spending; they are generally not in favor of large expenditures on military operations or other matters. Meanwhile, most Democrats are also likely to reject any such request from the Trump administration.
