Tehran: The US has launched a massive attack on the Iranian Navy's two most important naval bases, Bandar Abbas Naval Base and Konark Naval Base. Following the US and Israeli attacks, several satellite images of these two naval bases have emerged. These images show the IRINS Makran Sea Base-type vessel stationed at Bandar Abbas Naval Base on fire. In addition to being the Iranian Navy's main headquarters, Bandar Abbas is a naval base designed to control Iran's Strait of Hormuz. US President Donald Trump has stated that eliminating Iran's naval force is the primary objective of US officials. The US has claimed to have destroyed 10 Iranian ships so far.
Images released by Planet Labs show the situation at the Bandar Abbas Naval Base, taken at night. This base houses the Iranian Navy's main headquarters and many of its most capable ships and submarines. Thick black smoke can be seen in the images, with a plume of smoke rising from one location. The impact of the attack can be seen in several parts of the facility. An assessment of the images shows that the floating dock has been severely damaged, patrol boats have been damaged, and the building has been completely destroyed.
The US Destroyed the Bandar Abbas Naval Base
Images show that the IRINS Makran ship was attacked. It was docked at a berth at the southern end of the naval base. The ship is an oil tanker that Iranian authorities converted into a "forward base ship." It has a large, open flight deck and other features at its bow. The Makran ship has made numerous trips abroad since its commissioning in 2021. It is one of several sea-based ships that Iran has commissioned in recent years. Furthermore, the March 2nd and earlier images indicate that one, possibly two, frigate-sized warships were also attacked. This is clearly one of the most valuable targets at the port. A Kilo-class submarine and a smaller submarine in the port were unharmed. Additional satellite images indicate that several other major Iranian naval warships may have been destroyed or severely damaged. Bandar Abbas Port is located in Bandar Abbas, the capital of Iran's Hormozgan province, and is located very close to the Strait of Hormuz.
The US has also attacked Konark Port.
Due to the smoke in the Bandar Abbas image, it is difficult to estimate how many Iranian Navy ships in the port have suffered damage. Comparing the image from March 2nd with the image from February 26th, it is clear that many small boats and some larger ships have been moved out of the port. This may have been done immediately after the attacks on Iran began. It is also possible that some ships may have been sunk, but there are no signs of sinking. Nevertheless, several Iranian Navy ships remain afloat, and several warships are visible in drydock.
Iranian naval assets have also been attacked outside Bandar Abbas. Images indicate that attacks have been reported at the port in Konark, near the southeastern tip of Iran. Other satellite images show that several warships were destroyed and/or damaged at the site, including what was initially believed to be an Alvand-class frigate. U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) later identified the ship as a Maouj-class warship, sometimes also called the Jamaran-class, which is derived from the Alvand-class. Konark Port is located in Iran's Sistan and Baluchistan province. It is located right next to the famous Chabahar Port (near the Gulf of Oman).
