Corrections Policy

Our commitment to accuracy and transparency means we correct mistakes promptly and clearly. Learn how we handle errors and keep our journalism reliable.

SECTION 01

Our Commitment

TRANSPARENCY

At Times Indian, we are committed to accuracy, transparency, and accountability. Despite our rigorous fact-checking processes, errors can occasionally occur. When they do, we correct them promptly, transparently, and prominently.

This Corrections Policy outlines our approach to identifying, correcting, and communicating errors across all our platforms. It applies to all content published by Times Indian, including news articles, opinion pieces, videos, and social media posts.

Note: "We believe that how we handle mistakes is as important as getting the story right in the first place."

SECTION 02

What Constitutes an Error

DEFINITION

Times Indian defines an error as any factual inaccuracy, misstatement, or omission that materially affects the understanding of a story. Errors include:

Factual Errors: Incorrect names, dates, figures, locations, or historical facts
Misquotations: Inaccurate or misleading attribution of quotes
Contextual Errors: Information presented without necessary context that changes its meaning
Omissions: Failure to include relevant information that would provide balance
Technical Errors: Broken links, incorrect media attachments, or formatting issues
Headline Errors: Headlines that misrepresent or oversimplify the story

Note: "Minor typographical errors that don't affect meaning are corrected without formal notices."

SECTION 03

How to Report an Error

REPORTING

We encourage readers to bring potential errors to our attention. Multiple channels are available for reporting:

Corrections Email: corrections@timesindian.com (preferred method)
Online Form: Corrections form available on our website
Social Media: Direct message on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram
Phone: +91 22 1234 5678 (during business hours)
Postal Mail: Times Indian Corrections Department, India

Note: "When reporting an error, please include the article URL, a description of the error, and supporting documentation if available."

SECTION 04

Corrections Process

PROCEDURE

When a potential error is identified, Times Indian follows a structured process to verify and address it:

Verification: The claim is investigated by the relevant editorial team
Fact-Checking: Supporting evidence is reviewed and verified
Editorial Review: A senior editor reviews the findings and determines appropriate action
Correction Issued: If an error is confirmed, a correction is issued following our guidelines
Notification: The reader who reported the error is notified of the resolution

Note: "We aim to acknowledge all correction requests within 24 hours and resolve them within 72 hours."

SECTION 05

Levels of Correction

CLASSIFICATION

Times Indian categorizes corrections into three levels based on significance:

Minor Corrections: Spelling, grammar, or formatting fixes that don't affect meaning
Standard Corrections: Factual errors that don't fundamentally alter the story's thesis
Significant Corrections: Errors that change the understanding of a story or involve ethical breaches

Note: "The level of correction determines how prominently and permanently it is displayed."

SECTION 06

How We Correct

METHODS

Times Indian employs different methods to correct errors based on their significance and the platform:

In-Article Corrections: Errors are fixed directly in the article with a note at the top or bottom
Correction Notices: A separate notice explaining the error and correction
Editor's Notes: For significant issues, an editor's note provides context
Retractions: Articles that are fundamentally flawed may be retracted entirely
Social Media Corrections: Corrections are posted on the same platforms where errors appeared

Note: "All corrections are clearly labeled and explain both the error and the correction."

SECTION 07

Correction Format

TEMPLATE

When we correct an error, our correction notices follow a standardized format to ensure clarity and transparency:

Clear Label: CORRECTION, CLARIFICATION, or EDITOR'S NOTE at the beginning
Original Error: A clear statement of what was originally published incorrectly
Corrected Information: The accurate information
Date of Correction: When the correction was made
Editorial Contact: Contact information for further inquiries

Note: "Example: 'CORRECTION: An earlier version of this article incorrectly stated that... The correct information is...'"

SECTION 08

Prominence of Corrections

VISIBILITY

The prominence of a correction corresponds to the significance of the error:

Minor Errors: Corrected in the article with no separate notice
Standard Errors: Correction notice at the bottom of the article
Significant Errors: Correction notice at the top of the article
Major Errors: Separate correction article linked from the original
Retractions: Prominently displayed with explanation

Note: "Corrections to widely circulated errors may be highlighted on our homepage or social media."

SECTION 09

Updates vs. Corrections

DISTINCTION

Times Indian distinguishes between updates and corrections:

Updates: Adding new information to a developing story, not fixing an error
Corrections: Fixing factual inaccuracies in previously published content
Clarifications: Providing additional context to prevent misunderstanding
Editor's Notes: Explaining significant changes or context about the reporting

Note: "Updates are labeled with 'UPDATED' and the date, while corrections are labeled with 'CORRECTION'."

SECTION 10

Retractions

REMOVAL

In rare cases where an article is fundamentally flawed, Times Indian may retract it entirely. Retractions are reserved for situations including:

Factual Foundation: The core factual basis of the article is incorrect
Source Failure: Key sources are found to be fabricated or unreliable
Ethical Breach: The article was obtained through unethical means
Legal Requirements: Required by law or court order

Note: "Retracted articles remain online with a clear notice explaining the retraction, preserving transparency."

SECTION 11

Corrections Log

TRANSPARENCY

Times Indian maintains a public Corrections Log documenting all significant corrections made to our content. This log serves as a permanent record of our commitment to accountability.

Article Title: The title of the corrected article
Original Publication Date: When the article was first published
Correction Date: When the correction was made
Error Description: What was incorrect in the original
Correction Description: How it was corrected
Editor Responsible: The editor who approved the correction

Note: "The Corrections Log is updated weekly and available for public review at timesindian.com/corrections-log."

SECTION 12

Deadline for Corrections

TIMELINESS

Times Indian accepts correction requests indefinitely. There is no statute of limitations on accuracy.

Recent Articles: Corrected promptly, usually within 72 hours
Archived Articles: Corrected as identified, with notice of correction
Historical Content: Corrected with historical context preserved

Note: "We believe it's never too late to correct the record."

SECTION 13

Reader Communication

DIALOGUE

When a reader reports an error, we maintain communication throughout the process:

Acknowledgement: We acknowledge receipt within 24 hours
Status Updates: We provide updates on the investigation if it takes more than 48 hours
Resolution Notice: We inform the reader when a correction is made
Appeals: Readers may appeal our decision if they disagree with the resolution

Note: "We value readers as partners in maintaining accuracy and welcome all reports."

SECTION 14

Staff Accountability

ACCOUNTABILITY

Journalists and editors at Times Indian are held accountable for errors in their work:

Error Documentation: All errors are documented in our editorial system
Pattern Review: Repeated errors trigger review and additional training
Performance Impact: Correction rates are considered in performance evaluations
Serious Breaches: Ethical violations may result in disciplinary action

Note: "We view errors as learning opportunities and focus on systemic improvements rather than punishment."

SECTION 15

Independent Ombudsman

OVERSIGHT

Times Indian has appointed an independent Ombudsman to review reader complaints and ensure our corrections process is fair and transparent.

Role: Independent review of correction disputes
Appointment: Serves a three-year term, appointed by the Ethics Committee
