Tehran/Tel Aviv: Tensions that had been simmering in the Middle East for days have flared up once again. Just hours after Iran fired missiles at Israel, the Israeli Air Force launched an attack on Tehran. The IDF stated that the Israeli Air Force struck military targets in western and central Iran. Local Iranian media reports indicate that explosions were heard in Tehran, Tabriz, and Isfahan.
Airspace over Tehran closed
Following the Israeli airstrikes, Iran closed the airspace around Imam Khomeini International Airport in the capital, Tehran. Khomeini Airport is the country's main airport. Iran has confirmed the Israeli strikes; the state news agency IRNA reported this information citing the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
Strikes on 15 targets in Iran
In a statement, the IRGC said that Israel attacked several locations inside Iran using air-launched ballistic missiles. Iranian state media reported explosions in Tehran, Tabriz, and Isfahan. According to Iranian media reports, Israel struck approximately 15 targets. Al Jazeera reported that a drone facility in Tehran was among the targets hit.
Retaliation for Iran's missile attacks
Some reports indicate that Tehran's Mehrabad International Airport was also among the locations targeted. The Israeli military (IDF) stated that its air force had struck targets in central and western Iran. It noted that these strikes were carried out hours after Iran had launched a barrage of missiles at Israel.
US military not involved in the attack
Meanwhile, a US official stated that the US military was not involved in the Israeli strikes on Iran. Axios, citing a US defense official, reported that the Israeli strikes were relatively limited in scope. Earlier, late Sunday night, Iran had attacked Israel with ballistic missiles, prompting the Israeli military to activate its air defense systems. Following Iran's attack, President Trump had urged Netanyahu not to take retaliatory action. Axios had reported that the Israeli Prime Minister had agreed to this request.
