Mark Carney Breaks Silence on Nijjar Case After Meeting PM Modi, Says “Judicial Process On”

Kanainiskis: Pointing out that the case of murder of pro-Khalistan Sikh separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar is pending before the court, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has said that he will have to be cautious while making any comment on this. Carney was asked whether he had talked to Prime Minister Narendra Modi about the murder of Nijjar on Canadian soil during the G-7 summit on Tuesday.

What did Carney say after meeting PM Modi

In response to this question, Carney said, "We discussed about this. Prime Minister Modi and I have discussed the importance of direct cooperation to enforce the law, the need to address international repression.'' The Canadian Prime Minister said, ''And obviously a judicial process is underway and I have to be careful about further comment.''

Tension in India-Canada relations after Nijjar murder

Relations between Canada and India soured significantly after the murder of pro-Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar on June 18, 2023. In October last year, India recalled its top officials after Ottawa attempted to link the Indian High Commissioner and five other diplomats to the Nijjar case. India also expelled the same number of Canadian diplomats.

Carney has become the PM of Canada after Trudeau

India had accused the government of former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of allowing pro-Khalistan elements to spread their roots. Carney, an economist by profession, took over as the new Prime Minister of Canada in March. New Delhi had said after Trudeau stepped down as Prime Minister that it hoped to rebuild relations with Canada based on "mutual trust and sensitivity".
