New Delhi: 2025 has been a surprise for those interested in geopolitics. Hardly anyone would have thought that America and Russia, who have a grudge against each other, would be seen standing in the same camp. After Donald Trump became the President of America, the equations have changed very rapidly. Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin are seen on the same page these days. Now the situation has become such that America and Russia seem to be friends, while China is finding itself isolated. The latest issue is the cut in defense budget. This issue has brought an interesting turn in international politics. For the first time, Russia and America seem to be agreeing on a proposal, while China seems to be isolated.
Trump's appeal, Putin's consent
Donald Trump has proposed to the US, Russia and China to reduce their defence budget by 50%. Surprisingly, Russian President Vladimir Putin has called this suggestion a 'good proposal'. Putin said, "If the US cuts its defence budget by 50%, we are also ready. Then if China also agrees, it will be a big step."
When he was questioned about China's response, he said, "I cannot speak on behalf of China, but Russia is ready to negotiate on this." This consent of Russia indicates that an agreement may be reached soon regarding the Ukraine war.
China's denial: 'Our needs are different'
China has directly rejected Trump's proposal. Beijing says that its military needs are different and it will not compromise on its security. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian said, "Our defence budget is limited and necessary. It is necessary to protect our sovereignty and development interests." China also made it clear that it is not in any arms race, but will continue to strengthen its military power.
China is continuously increasing defense spending
In 2024, China increased its defense budget by 7.2%.
With $236 billion, it is the country with the second largest defense budget in the world.
The US is at the top of this list, while Russia's military spending has reached 9% of GDP.
Trump's strategy: Reduce spending together
Donald Trump believes that the US, Russia and China should spend their military expenses on other needs. He said, "We are spending about $1 trillion on defense, while China will also reach $400 billion. This is an unnecessary race." Trump has also appealed for a reduction in nuclear weapons. He says, "We have so many weapons that we can destroy the world 100 times."
