Dhaka: The Bangladesh Army has received a new batch of Chinese-made VT-5 light tanks, Bangladeshi media and regional defense observers reported. The Chinese VT-5 light tanks are equipped with modern 105 mm ammunition and are designed to engage heavily armored targets. This delivery of tanks reflects the growing defense ties between China and Bangladesh. Over the past ten years, China has become Bangladesh's main defense supplier. China has supplied Bangladesh with naval ships, aircraft, armored vehicles, and missile systems.
The VT-5 is a light main battle tank. It was developed by China primarily for export customers requiring armored mobility in difficult terrain. The system is designed for operations in environments where heavy tanks face logistical or mobility challenges, including riverine terrain, soft terrain, and areas with limited infrastructure.
What are the Chinese tank's specialties?
This tank features a stable 105 mm gun, modern fire-control systems, and modular armor protection, combined with its low weight. Its configuration allows for rapid maneuver while maintaining sufficient firepower to engage armored vehicles and fortified positions. It is supported by a digital battlefield management system and thermal imaging sight.
Light tanks like the VT-5 are often used in reconnaissance, rapid reaction, and fire support roles rather than direct heavy armor combat. Their low weight allows for deployment under bridges and in areas unsuitable for conventional main battle tanks. This increases maneuver options for commanders.
This tank is manufactured by NORINCO.
The VT-5 (Type 15 or ZTQ-15) is manufactured by the Chinese defense company NORINCO (China North Industries Corporation). The VT5 was showcased at the Zhuhai Airshow in China in November 2016. Its main weapon is a 105 mm rifled gun with a firing range of 3,000 meters. It also has a tandem HEAT (High Explosive Anti-Tank) warhead, which can destroy tanks protected by armor or reactive armor.
