Bangladesh, China sign drone manufacturing pact under Yunus-led interim rule

Dhaka: A historic defense agreement has been signed between the air forces of China and Bangladesh. China has signed an agreement with the Bangladesh Air Force to manufacture state-of-the-art UAVs, which also includes a provision for technology transfer. This defense agreement between China and Bangladesh is expected to have a direct impact on India. India is already facing challenges on its borders with China and Pakistan, and now the Bangladesh border is also at risk of becoming insecure. After the fall of Sheikh Hasina's government, the head of the interim government of Bangladesh, Muhammad Yunus, has rapidly strengthened ties with China.

According to a Times of India report, China has signed an agreement between the Bangladesh Air Force (BAF) and the China Electronics Technology Group Corporation (CETC). This agreement is for establishing a new Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) manufacturing and assembly plant in Bangladesh, which also includes a provision for technology transfer.

What is the impact of the China-Bangladesh defense agreement on India?

The TOI report, citing sources familiar with the matter in Dhaka, states that under this agreement, the BAF and CETC will jointly set up a state-of-the-art plant. Information regarding this was also published on the official Facebook page of the Bangladesh Air Force. It stated that the signing ceremony was held at the Bangladesh Air Force Headquarters. Air Chief Marshal Hasan Mahmood Khan was present as the chief guest.

Relations between Bangladesh and India have deteriorated significantly since the fall of Sheikh Hasina's government. China is continuously strengthening defense ties with Bangladesh and has its sights set on Northeast India. Dangerous statements regarding Northeast India have been repeatedly issued from Bangladesh. Mohammad Yunus himself has described Bangladesh as the "guardian" of the Bay of Bengal. During his visit to Beijing last year, he also invited China to invest in areas close to northeastern India. Therefore, the China-Bangladesh defense relationship could have a direct impact on India.

The statement further said that "this agreement will include technology transfer, capacity building, industrial skills development, and joint technical cooperation. This will help Bangladesh achieve long-term self-reliance in UAV production." Under this agreement, initially, medium-altitude long-endurance UAVs with vertical take-off and landing capabilities will be produced and assembled for the Bangladesh Air Force. The statement also said that the Bangladesh Air Force will produce its own UAVs, which will play a crucial role not only in military operations but also in humanitarian assistance and disaster management.
