Dhaka: The interim government of Bangladesh has expressed deep sorrow over the lynching of Hindu man Dipu Chandra Das. The government also extended its condolences to Dipu's family. Dipu was a factory worker in Mymensingh. On Tuesday, Bangladesh's Education Advisor Professor C.R. Abrar, on behalf of the Yunus government, met with the victim's family and assured them of sympathy and support during this difficult time. Bangladesh has faced criticism from India to the United States over the killing.
Dipu was beaten to death
Das, a factory worker in Mymensingh, was beaten to death on December 19 on charges of alleged blasphemy, and his body was set on fire. The government described the killing as a heinous criminal act with no justification and emphasized that such violence has no place in Bangladeshi society. Officials stated that allegations, rumors, or differences in beliefs cannot be an excuse for violent acts, and no individual has the right to take the law into their own hands.
12 arrested in Dipu Das murder case
Bangladesh police have arrested 12 people in connection with the crime. They said that the investigation is ongoing. The interim government has directed that the case be investigated thoroughly and without exception, and warned that such acts will be dealt with the full force of the law. The Chief Advisor's office confirmed that financial and welfare assistance will be provided to Dipu Chandra Das's family, and the relevant authorities will remain in constant contact with them in the coming days. US lawmakers criticize Bangladesh
US lawmakers have condemned the lynching of Dipu Chandra Das and called on Bangladesh to protect religious minorities and restore the rule of law. Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi and New York State Assembly Member Jennifer Rajkumar strongly condemned the mob killing of Dipu Chandra Das amidst growing instability and unrest. Krishnamoorthi, a Democratic congressman from Illinois, urged Bangladeshi authorities to ensure accountability, protect religious minorities, and restore the rule of law. New York State Assembly Member Jennifer Rajkumar said she was "deeply disturbed" by the ongoing violence against the minority Hindu community in Bangladesh, the most recent example being the brutal murder of Das.
