Bilawal Bhutto Warns of Nuclear War Over Indus Treaty, Urges US to Pressure India for Talks

Washington: Pakistan's former foreign minister Bilawal Bhutto has threatened India with nuclear war over suspension of Indus Water Treaty. Pakistan People's Party chairman and former foreign minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari made a venomous statement against India at the Middle East Institute in Washington on 5 June 2025. He said that "India is disrupting Pakistan's water resources by violating the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT), thereby laying the foundation for the outbreak of "the first nuclear war over water". Apart from this, Bilawal termed India's blocking of Pakistan's water supply as an "act of war" and said that "it is an existential crisis for Pakistan." Apart from this, he urged the international community to "prevent India from violating the IWT, because if India is allowed to do so, it can become a dangerous precedent for other countries as well." Let us tell you that an agreement was signed between India and Pakistan in 1960 on the Indus Water Treaty with the mediation of the World Bank, in which India got the water of the eastern rivers (Ravi, Beas, Sutlej) and Pakistan got the water of the western rivers (Indus, Jhelum, Chenab).

This treaty lasted till the Pahalgam terrorist attack. After the Pahalgam terrorist attack, India has suspended this agreement. Speaking about this in America, Bilawal Bhutto said That "India is disturbing this balance." Bilawal Bhutto's threat of nuclear war Pakistani leaders keep threatening India with nuclear war on every issue. While during Operation Sindoor, India has made it clear that India will no longer tolerate any kind of nuclear blackmailing. India has made it clear that Operation Sindoor is going on and if Pakistani terrorists carry out any kind of terrorist attack in India, then India will enter Pakistan and attack the terrorist bases. Speaking in America, Bilawal Bhutto said that "We have declared that cutting off our water supply will be an act of war." The former foreign minister of Pakistan further threatened that "We are not saying this as nationalism. We are not saying this for fun. This is an existential crisis for us. Any country on earth, no matter its size, its strength or its capability, will fight for its existence and its water." He stressed that "India must abide by the Indus Water Treaty and take a firm stand to not let the US and other countries violate this treaty."

Further Bilawal Bhutto said that "And if our dialogue and diplomacy towards peace is to be successful, if we have to talk to India, have positive talks with India, new arrangements, new deals, maybe even new treaties with India, then certainly they will have to first abide by the old treaties and withdraw their decision about the Indus Water Treaty." He said that "India suspended the Indus Water Treaty after relations between the two countries deteriorated following the Pahalgam attack in Kashmir on April 22. In retaliation, Pakistan decided that it would exercise the right to suspend all bilateral agreements with India, including the Shimla Agreement. It also announced the closure of the Wagah border and suspension of all trade with New Delhi, among other measures."
