Quetta: There is chaos in Balochistan, Pakistan after the news of train hijack. Apart from about 500 passengers, some security force personnel are also on board this train. This train named Jaffar Express was going from Quetta to Peshawar in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. It is being told that many people have been injured in the firing on the train in Peru Kanri area of Kach district, including the train driver. The Balochistan Liberation Army has claimed responsibility for this train hijack. They have threatened that if any action is taken against them, it will have serious consequences.
What did the Baloch Liberation Army threaten?
According to Dawn newspaper, the Baloch Liberation Army claimed that many passengers and security force personnel on the train were in its custody and if any action was taken against them, it would have serious consequences. Sources told Geo News that the attackers blew up the railway track and later opened fire on the train carrying more than 400 passengers. They said that after the attack, there was heavy firing between security officials and attackers on the train. Railway officials said that the Jaffar Express has nine bogies and more than 500 passengers were on board. He said that the train left Quetta at 9 am today.
Heavy police force deployed at the spot
Speaking on the matter, Balochistan government spokesman Shahid Rind said that there were reports of heavy firing on the Quetta-Peshawar Jaffar Express. Following this, relief trains and security forces contingents were also sent to the spot. Provincial authorities launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident and possible terrorism aspects. Meanwhile, an emergency has been imposed at Sibi and Civil Hospital Quetta.
Terror attacks rise sharply in Pakistan
According to the provincial health department, all medical and paramedical staff have been called to the civil hospital and several wards have been vacated to deal with the emergency. According to data released by think tank Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS), January 2025 saw a sharp rise in terror attacks in the country, up 42% from the previous month.
74 terror attacks in Pakistan in 2025
The data showed that at least 74 terror attacks were recorded across the country, resulting in 91 deaths, including 35 security personnel, 20 civilians and 36 terrorists. Another 117 persons were injured, including 53 security force personnel, 54 civilians and 10 terrorists. Terrorist activities also increased in Balochistan, where at least 24 attacks took place, killing 26 people, including 11 security personnel, six civilians and nine militants.
