Chaos in Sindh: Protesters Halt Railways Over Canal Project, Entire Province on Standstill

Protests have intensified in Pakistan's Sindh province over the canal project. On Monday, a large number of protesters stopped rail and road traffic. Apart from this, most of the markets of Sindh remained closed on the call of the people. This is being described as the biggest movement in the history of Sindh.

Islamabad: A large number of people protested and blocked the railway line near Khairpur city in Pakistan's Sindh province. Due to this, all trains going towards Punjab stopped. This protest is being held against the Indus River Canal Project. The Pakistan government has started the 'Cholistan Project' to irrigate the land of South Punjab. Political parties across the country are opposing this scheme.

    PPP with the protesters

Government ally Pakistan People's Party (PPP) has also strongly opposed it. PPP has warned that if this scheme is not canceled, they can topple the government of Shahbaz Sharif. On Sunday, a large number of protesters and workers of some nationalist parties continued their protest near Khairpur city and blocked the railway line.

Most parties are protesting in Sindh

In Sindh province, protesters and leaders of political parties are expressing their protest by holding large meetings at various places. They are criticizing the Shahbaz Sharif government and its ally party PPP. They say that this plan is a conspiracy to turn the fertile land of Sindh into a desert. The nationwide protest against the canal project has also received support from lawyers. Lawyers in Sindh province staged a sit-in for the third consecutive day.

    Life affected in Sindh

People blocked the railway tracks for several hours in protest, but later the rail service was resumed. However, due to the ongoing protests and rallies against the canal project, life is being affected in the entire Sindh province. Markets remained closed due to protests in major cities and towns like Jamshoro, Larkana, Naushahro Feroze, Sujawal, Nawabshah and Ghotki. At many places, people blocked roads and national highways, blocking the way between Sindh and Punjab.

Most of the markets in Sindh closed

Hanif Shamon, a resident of Mithi in Tharparkar district of Sindh, said that shops, petrol pumps and markets remained closed in Larkana. The entire business also came to a standstill in areas like Ratodero, Bakrani, Dokri and Badah. Work has also stopped in Jamshoro and Nawabshah. Similar reports are coming from Sujawal, Kandhkot, Shahdadkot, Kashmore and other districts, where markets and public services have been closed.

The biggest movement in the history of Sindh?

Shamon said that people feel that this is the biggest movement in the history of Sindh. All roads leading to Punjab and other areas have been closed for the last three days in protest against the irrigation canals. Large scale protests are taking place in most parts of Sindh.

    Which project is being opposed?

The Pakistani government has planned to build six canals at a cost of $ 3.3 billion under the Green Pakistan Initiative, which will irrigate 12 lakh acres of alleged barren land in South Punjab. However, Sindh province has strongly opposed this decision. The Sindh government fears that the construction of these canals will reduce its share of water from the Indus River.
