China opposes Japan’s bid for permanent UNSC seat after Taiwan remarks

Beijing: The UN General Assembly held intergovernmental negotiations on the "fair distribution of Security Council seats and expansion of its membership" and other Security Council-related matters. In his final remarks, China's Permanent Representative to the UN, Fu Yisong, reiterated that Japan refuses to repent for its historical aggression, openly tramples on the post-war international order, interferes with the sovereignty of other countries, and poses new threats to regional peace and stability. Such a country is unworthy of seeking permanent membership.

What China Said on Security Council Reform

Fu Tsong also emphasized three points regarding Security Council reform: First, the Security Council cannot become a "club" of powerful and wealthy countries. Reform should not benefit only a small number of countries. Second, the representation and voice of developing countries must be truly enhanced, allowing small and medium-sized countries with independent foreign policies to participate in the Security Council.

    China Supports African Membership

The Chinese representative stated that historical injustices against Africa, in particular, must be rectified, and special arrangements should be made to prioritize the demands of African countries. Third, reform cannot be limited to current global circumstances. It must be planned with a strategic vision and a long-term perspective.

    China-Japan Tensions

Tensions between China and Japan over Taiwan have escalated significantly in recent months. Japan has viewed China's invasion of Taiwan as a threat to its existence. China has considered it a violation of its sovereignty. Relations between the two countries have steadily deteriorated due to disputes over islands in the East China Sea, military radar lock incidents, and historical grievances.
