Bern: The death toll from an explosion during New Year's celebrations at the Crans-Montana ski resort in Switzerland could reach 40 to 50. Police officers said that "several dozen" people are estimated to have died in the incident. However, the exact number of fatalities has not yet been confirmed. Police have ruled out the possibility of the explosion being an attack. More than 100 people were celebrating New Year's in the bar at the time of the blast.
Prosecutor General Beatrice Pilloud said in a statement, "An investigation is underway to determine why and how this incident occurred. Currently, it is being treated as a fire. There is no question of any kind of attack. The victims are being identified, and the bodies will be handed over to their families as soon as possible."
Rescue and Relief Operations Continue
Swiss police officials said that approximately 100 people were injured, many of them seriously. Swiss police also stated that the victims include citizens of various countries, meaning that foreigners are among the dead. Local authorities have confirmed that large-scale rescue operations are underway.
Ten helicopters, 40 ambulances, and 150 personnel have been deployed for relief and rescue efforts. Police said the explosion occurred at the Constellation bar at 1:30 AM local time. According to regional councilor Mathias Reynard, the number of injured was so high that the regional hospital's intensive care unit and operating theaters were quickly completely filled.
