Ankara: Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has warned that attempts are being made to stoke conflict in the Eastern Mediterranean and that the consequences would be severe. Without explicitly naming them, Erdogan has threatened three of India's friends—Israel, Greece, and Cyprus. Israel is effectively attempting to encircle Turkey with the help of Cyprus and Greece, a move that has infuriated President Erdogan. He has threatened a stern response.
Turkish President Erdogan posted a series of tweets. He wrote, "We observe attempts to stoke the fires of conflict in the Eastern Mediterranean, particularly on the island of Cyprus. We are closely monitoring these developments. Let me state this very clearly: if any attempt is made to infringe upon the rights and legal claims of Turkey and the Turkish Cypriot people in the Eastern Mediterranean, our response will be very clear and very harsh."
Why is Erdogan lashing out at Israel?
The reason behind Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's aggressive stance is the emerging military and energy alliance between Israel, Greece, and Cyprus, which Turkey views as a direct threat to its sovereignty and security. Erdogan believes that Israel is conspiring to encircle Turkey by expanding its footprint in the Mediterranean. Addressing MPs from his AK Party regarding this matter, Erdogan stated that attempts are being made to foment unrest in the Mediterranean—specifically around the island of Cyprus—and that Turkey is closely monitoring these developments.
He remarked, "Certain small factions, whose ambitions far exceed their actual stature, have joined Israel's campaign of destabilization, acting as subcontractors for Zionism." Erdogan added that "these groups are merely building castles in the air in this region." He issued a stern warning: "Let me state this very clearly: no one should engage in such risky behavior. No one should follow the path of the murderous Zionist network. If the rights and legal interests of Turkey and the Turkish Cypriot people in the Eastern Mediterranean are threatened, everyone should know that our response will be very harsh."
Erdogan Issues Direct Threat to Israel
Erdogan stated that the "silence of the international community" has emboldened Israel, leading it to act with "extreme arrogance," which hinders the achievement of lasting peace, stability, and security in the region. The Turkish President further warned, "Bringing Israel back within the bounds of the law is no longer just a matter for a few nations; it is a shared concern for all of humanity. The impact of the attacks on Iran and Lebanon has been felt not only by countries in this region but also on a global scale."
Trilateral Military Alliance: Israel, Greece, and Cyprus
Israel has reached an agreement with Greece and Cyprus (the Greek administration) to establish a joint rapid-response military force in the Eastern Mediterranean.
This specialized military task force comprises approximately 2,500 troops, but its formation has infuriated Turkey. Under this arrangement, the Israeli Air Force and Navy are utilizing military bases located on Greek and Cypriot islands, such as Rhodes and Karpathos.
Turkey views this as an encirclement of its maritime borders and of Northern Cyprus (which Turkey supports). From these locations, Israel could launch attacks on Turkey with relative ease.
Meanwhile, Turkey is also incensed by Israeli strikes in Lebanon and Syria. In a speech, Erdogan explicitly stated that "Israel's attacks on Syria and Lebanon have now reached a point where they pose a direct threat to Turkey." Turkey shares a border with Syria. Erdogan fears that if Israel were to gain full control over Lebanon and Syria, the next diplomatic or military confrontation would take place directly on Turkey's borders.
