Fresh Unrest in Bangladesh as Tensions Rise After Student Leader’s Death

Dhaka: The violence that erupted in Bangladesh after the killing of Sharif Osman Hadi, a youth leader of the Inqilab Manch (Revolutionary Platform), is escalating. On Saturday, following Hadi's funeral in Dhaka, a crowd attempted to attack Parliament. After Hadi was buried, the crowd marched towards Parliament, chanting slogans and attempting to enter the premises. This raised fears of a repeat of the August situation in Dhaka, when a crowd of young people protesting against Sheikh Hasina's government caused widespread disruption at the parliamentary complex.

According to local media, after Osman Hadi's funeral on Saturday, an angry crowd in Dhaka began marching towards the Bangladesh Parliament. Officials said that seeing the situation deteriorating, security forces intervened and stopped the march. Security forces then used minimal force to disperse the protesters. No official confirmation of any damage to Parliament has been reported.

    Hadi Buried Under Tight Security

Sharif Osman Hadi was buried in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, on Saturday amidst tight security. Interim government chief advisor Muhammad Yunus and Army Chief General Waqar Uz Zaman attended the funeral prayers for Hadi of the Inqilab Manch at the South Plaza of the Parliament building complex.

A period of national mourning was declared in Bangladesh following Hadi's death. Hadi was one of the prominent leaders during the student-led protests last year that led to the fall of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's government. Hadi was an independent candidate in the general elections scheduled for February 12.

    Hadi Died in Singapore

Masked gunmen shot Hadi, the spokesperson for the Inqilab Manch, in the head in the Bijoynagar area of Dhaka on December 12. He was sent to Singapore for treatment, where he died on Thursday. Hadi's death has sparked unrest across the country. Violence and vandalism have been reported in several areas.

Hadi's body was buried under tight security on the Dhaka University campus. His grave is located near the tomb of Kazi Nazrul Islam, the national poet of Bangladesh. Authorities said that due to the security situation in Dhaka, only a select few were allowed to attend Hadi's funeral.
