Dhaka: Another case of violence against religious minorities has emerged in Bangladesh. Following the death of youth leader Usman Hadi last month, Wednesday saw the fourth attack on a Hindu man. On Wednesday night, a group of people attempted to burn a Hindu businessman alive. The victim has been identified as Khokan Chandra. Khokan somehow managed to save his life by jumping into a pond.
According to reports, 40-year-old Khokan Chandra was returning home after closing his pharmacy shop at Kerbhanga market on the evening of December 31. Around 9 pm, when he reached the Tiloi area, some people stopped him and attacked him. After beating him, they attempted to burn him alive. Khokan was severely injured in the incident.
Stabbed with Knives
After stopping Khokan Chandra, the attackers stabbed him with knives. After stabbing him, they poured petrol on his body and set him on fire. Khokan ran to save his life, and a nearby pond proved to be his salvation. He jumped into the pond, after which local people rescued him.
The attack on Khokan Chandra is the fourth such incident of violence against Hindus in Bangladesh in the last two weeks. This series of attacks began after the death of youth leader Usman Hadi last month. Following Hadi's death, amidst widespread violence and protests across the country, right-wing forces have targeted minorities.
International Condemnation
In Bangladesh, the case of an attack on Dipu Chandra Das came to light on December 18. Dipu was apprehended by a mob around 9 pm on December 18 on charges of insulting the Prophet and was beaten to death. The mob then set his body on fire. This incident has been condemned worldwide, but the violence in Bangladesh is not stopping.
