India, China and US abstain on UN resolution marking Ukraine war anniversary

New York: India abstained from voting on a key resolution on the Russia-Ukraine war at the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday. The resolution, which calls for a complete and unconditional ceasefire in Ukraine, was passed by the UN General Assembly on February 24th, marking four years of the Russia-Ukraine war. The resolution supported Ukraine's international border. The 193-member UN General Assembly adopted the resolution on Tuesday by a landslide. 107 countries voted in favor of the resolution, presented by Kyiv, while 12 voted against it, while 51 abstained.

India, China, and the US stand united

India was among the 51 countries that abstained from the resolution. China, like India, abstained. The US, Brazil, Bangladesh, South Africa, Sri Lanka, the United Arab Emirates, and Bahrain also abstained. The resolution, titled "Support for Lasting Peace in Ukraine," reiterated the demand for a complete, just, and lasting peace in accordance with international law, including the UN Charter.

What will be the impact of the resolution?

Although voting on the resolution does not make it legally binding, it has political implications. Russia, Belarus, and Sudan joined the opposition, while Russia's allies, such as India and China, abstained. The US abstention under the Trump administration is also significant.

During the four years of the Russia-Ukraine war, the 15-member UN Security Council has been at a constant deadlock. It has failed to take action on the Ukraine conflict because Russia holds a veto in the Security Council. At a subsequent Security Council meeting, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said the Ukraine war remains a stain on our collective conscience and reiterated his call for an immediate ceasefire. Ukraine's president thanked the countries that supported the vote, saying, "I am grateful to all 107 countries that stood with Ukraine at the United Nations today to save lives."
