Indus Treaty Fallout: Floods Wreak Havoc in PoK After India’s Tough Action, People Flee for Safety

India-Pakistan Tension: After the Pahalgam attack, India has isolated its neighbour by cutting off its food and water supply. India has suspended the Indus Water Treaty. Due to this, on one hand, there is a water crisis in Pakistan and on the other hand, there is a flood situation in PoK. According to the latest report, due to the rising water level of Jhelum, there is a flood situation in PoK and people are running here and there to save their lives.

India-Pakistan Tension: After the massacre of Hindus in Pahalgam, India-Pakistan relations have become even more tense. India has imposed several sanctions to isolate the neighbouring country. This also includes the suspension of the Indus Water Treaty. The entire Pakistan is furious due to India's sanctions. The statements of Pakistani leaders are showing that the situation there is worse. Now news is coming that the water level of the Jhelum river has suddenly increased in PoK. A flood situation arose there. Local officials claim that India released water from the 'Uri Dam' on Saturday without any prior warning. PoK officials accused India of "water terrorism".

The release of water created a water emergency situation in Hattian Bala in PoK. Local people living on the river bank had to flee to safer places. However, there was no confirmation or denial from India on Pakistan's claim. Pakistani officials called this move a violation of international norms and the Indus Water Treaty. Let us tell you that after the massacre of Hindus by terrorists in Pahalgam on April 22, India suspended the Indus Water Treaty on April 23. People living in PoK said that due to the rapid inflow of water, we are struggling to protect life and property.

Pakistanis running away to save their lives

Indian media has claimed that water has been released due to recent heavy rains in Jammu and Kashmir. Local officials in Muzaffarabad, the capital of PoK, and Chakothi issued warnings through loudspeakers. Locals were urged to evacuate the area as soon as possible due to the rapid rise in the water level of the river. Muhammad Asif, a resident of Dumel village on the river bank in PoK, said that we did not receive any warning. The water came quickly and we are struggling to protect life and property.

Advice to stay away from the river

A district government official in Muzaffarabad, the capital of PoK, has advised citizens to stay away from the river bank or nearby areas. The official said that moderate floods have occurred due to India releasing more water than usual into the Jhelum river.

    Both countries share water information

Moderate floods have been reported in the lower areas of Kohala and Dhalkot. There have been some reports of heavy damage to animals and crops in this. Let us tell you that there is an agreement. It was done by the World Bank to control the shared river water. The treaty mandates that the two countries share information on water releases to prevent downstream damage.

    Huge crisis

Officials said the immediate focus was on the safety of residents. The Hatian Bala administration has set up temporary shelters and deployed rescue teams. “We are doing all we can, but the scale of this crisis is enormous,” said district commissioner Bilal Ahmed.
