Maldives President Sets 15-Hour Press Meet Record, Faces Heat Over India Remark

Male: Maldives President Mohammed Muizzu has claimed to create a unique record by holding a press conference for 15 consecutive hours. Maldives President Mohammed Muizzu addressed a press conference for about 15 hours on Sunday. A statement issued by his office said that President Muizzu broke the previous record set by Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky. 46-year-old President Muizzu started this marathon press conference at 10:00 am (local time) on Saturday. However, he took time to read Namaz during this time. He held a continuous press conference for a total of 14 hours and 54 minutes.

A statement issued by the President's Office said that "the press conference continued even after midnight and this is a new world record set by the President of any country. During this time, President Muizzu was continuously answering questions from journalists." Earlier in October 2019, Ukraine's National Records Agency claimed that Zelensky's 14-hour press conference broke the record of more than seven hours of press conference set by Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko.

President Muizzu created a unique record

A statement issued by the President's Office said that "he acknowledged the important role of the press in society and emphasized the importance of factual, balanced and unbiased reporting." During the long session, Muizzu also answered questions submitted by the public through journalists. The statement said that Muizzu, who will come to power in 2023, also hinted at his island nation moving up two places to 104th place out of 180 countries in the 2025 World Press Freedom Index published by Reporters Without Borders (RSF). During this, the President of Maldives answered many types of questions.

During this press conference, about two dozen journalists attended it, for whom food and drink arrangements were made. Let us tell you that earlier in the year 2009, former President of Maldives Mohammed Nasheed held a press conference sitting underwater. The purpose of which was to draw the world's attention to the marine threat. During this, he expressed concern and said that the rising sea level could submerge the low-lying areas. At the same time, after what he said about India during this time, an apology is being demanded from him. Former Maldives Foreign Minister Abdullah Shahid on Saturday criticized President Mohammed Muizzu's statement on India.

An apology is being demanded from President Muizzu because during this press conference, when he was asked a question about India, he said that there is nothing 'worrying' about the agreements that Maldives has made with India. After which the opposition says that Mohammed Muizzu continued to run an anti-India campaign, incited people's sentiments against India and misled the public. Therefore, Mohammed Muizzu should apologize. Abdullah Shahid said that Mohammed Muizzu should apologize to the people of both India and Maldives, because his campaign has damaged the relationship between the two countries. Abdullah Shahid said that Mohammed Muizzu had constantly beaten the drum in the 2023 elections that the agreements with India have damaged the integrity and sovereignty of Maldives.
