Modi-Meloni Meeting in Rome Signals Stronger India-Italy Partnership

Rome: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is currently on a visit to Italy. Upon his arrival in Rome, he received a grand welcome from Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. While taking a selfie with PM Modi, Meloni referred to him as a "friend." During this visit, Modi's signature 'Car Diplomacy' was witnessed once again; PM Modi and Meloni were seen riding together in the same car in Rome. Previously, PM Modi has also shared a ride in a car with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

PM Modi shared photographs with Giorgia Meloni on 'X' (formerly Twitter). He wrote, "I had the opportunity to meet Prime Minister Meloni over dinner in Rome. We visited the iconic Colosseum and exchanged views on a wide range of subjects. I look forward to our discussions scheduled for today." Hinting at potential major agreements, PM Modi stated that he would discuss ways to further strengthen the friendship between India and Italy with Meloni.

    Meloni Shares a Selfie

Upon Prime Minister Narendra Modi's arrival in Rome, he was welcomed by Italy's Deputy Prime Minister, Antonio Tajani. Additionally, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni extended her welcome by sharing a special selfie on 'X'. Sharing a photograph of herself and Narendra Modi on the platform, Meloni wrote, "Welcome to Rome, my friend."

This visit by PM Modi is expected to further strengthen the relationship between India and Italy. Several key agreements between the two nations are anticipated during this tour. Prior to this visit, PM Modi had traveled to Italy in June 2024 to participate in the G7 Summit. The personal rapport between PM Narendra Modi and Giorgia Meloni is also considered to be excellent. I have arrived in Rome, where I will hold discussions with President Sergio Mattarella and Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. The primary focus of this visit will be on strengthening cooperation between India and Italy. Special emphasis will be placed on the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC). I will also visit the headquarters of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), a visit that will underscore India's commitment to global food security.

Meloni and Modi Present a Framework

In a joint article published on Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni presented a detailed framework for cooperation between their two nations across various sectors—including trade, technology, energy, space, and security—set against the backdrop of the emerging 'Indo-Mediterranean' corridor.

Regarding a 'Strategic Partnership for the Indo-Mediterranean,' Modi and Meloni stated that relations between India and Italy have reached a decisive turning point. In recent years, these ties have expanded at an accelerated pace. The relationship has evolved from one of cordial friendship into a 'Special Strategic Partnership,' founded upon a shared vision for the future.

The Convergence of the Mediterranean and the Indo-Pacific

The Prime Ministers of Italy and India asserted that the Mediterranean and the Indo-Pacific cannot be viewed in isolation from one another. We are witnessing the emergence of a distinct entity that may be termed the 'Indo-Mediterranean.' This constitutes a vital corridor for the flow of trade, technology, energy, data, and ideas, effectively linking the Indian Ocean region with Europe.

PM Modi and Meloni placed particular emphasis on mutual cooperation in the fields of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and democratic values within this rapidly digitizing world. They wrote that technology cannot—and must not—replace human beings; rather, it should be utilized to enrich public discourse and enhance democratic processes.
