Myanmar Earthquake Aftermath: ISRO Satellite Images Reveal Devastation – Bridges Collapsed, University Destroyed

New Delhi: The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) has released satellite images of the extensive damage caused by the 7.7 magnitude earthquake in Myanmar and neighboring countries on Friday. ISRO has succeeded in taking pictures from a height of 500 kilometers from the Earth using its best earth imaging satellite, Cartosat-3. Cartosat-3 can help in taking images at a resolution of less than 50 centimeters.

A huge bridge built on the Irrawaddy River collapsed

The pictures show how a huge bridge built on the Irrawaddy River collapsed. Also, the damage to Mandalay University and the collapse of Anand Pagoda are also shown. According to the space agency, Cartosat-3, launched in 2019, is a third-generation agile advanced earth imaging satellite. ISRO rarely releases images from this highly advanced satellite.

Images of Mandalay and Sagaing cities

The National Remote Sensing Centre, an ISRO body, said that Cartosat-3 images of the post-disaster over Mandalay and Sagaing cities in Myanmar were received on Saturday. Additionally, Cartosat-3 data received on March 18, which covers the same area, was sent for change analysis and damage assessment. Significant damage to infrastructure was observed in Mandalay city. Mandalay city and Ava bridge have been damaged.

7.7 magnitude earthquake

An earthquake of 7.7 magnitude struck Myanmar on Friday. This was followed by another powerful tremor of 6.4 magnitude. The epicenter of the earthquake was located at a depth of 10 kilometers near the Sagaing-Mandalay border. Mandalay, Myanmar's second largest city, has suffered heavy damage. The earthquake also shook the Myanmar capital and other regions. This resulted in the collapse of infrastructure, roads and residential buildings. The tremors were felt not only in Myanmar but also in neighboring countries and northern parts of Chiang Mai and Thailand.
