Mexico City: A major train accident occurred in Mexico on Sunday, involving a train carrying 250 people. The accident happened in Oaxaca, southern Mexico, when several carriages of a passenger train derailed. At least 13 people were killed and 98 were injured. Mexican authorities said rescue operations were underway throughout the night. The injured have been taken to nearby hospitals.
A statement issued by the Mexican Navy, which operates the railway line, said the train involved in the accident was carrying 241 passengers and nine crew members. The accident resulted in 13 deaths and 98 people are receiving treatment. They added that 139 people are out of danger.
Train Service Disrupted
Authorities said the Interoceanic train, which connects the states of Oaxaca and Veracruz, derailed on a curve near the city of Nizanda. An investigation into the cause of the accident has been launched following orders from the Mexican Attorney General.
