Moscow: Russia said on Sunday that President Vladimir Putin is ready for peace with Ukraine, but achieving 'his goals' remains his priority. Dmitry Peskov, spokesman for the Kremlin, the center of power in Russia, said this. The statement comes a few days after US President Donald Trump gave Russia a 50-day deadline to agree to a ceasefire or be ready for tough sanctions.
Putin is ready to compromise with Ukraine
Peskov told state TV correspondent Pavel Zarubin, 'President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly expressed his desire to bring the Ukrainian agreement to a peaceful conclusion as soon as possible. This is a long process, it requires effort, and it is not easy.' He said, 'The main priority for us is to achieve our goals. Our goals are clear.'
Will Ukraine accept Russian conditions?
The Kremlin has insisted that any peace deal will require Ukraine to withdraw from the four regions that Russia occupied in September 2022. Russia also wants Ukraine to abandon its bid to join NATO and accept tight restrictions on its armed forces, which have been rejected by Kiev and its Western allies.
Trump threatens tough sanctions on Russia
US President Donald Trump on July 14 warned of imposing heavy tariffs on Russia and announced resupply of US weapons to Ukraine. Trump said that if a peace agreement is not reached within 50 days, he will impose 'severe tariffs' on Russia.
