Russia demands Maduro’s release as UN Security Council splits over US action

New York: The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) held an emergency meeting on Monday to discuss the Venezuelan crisis. UN Secretary-General António Guterres expressed concern and stated that the UN Charter must be respected in the case of US military intervention and the capture of President Nicolás Maduro. Russia, Cuba, and several other countries strongly criticized the US action in the Security Council. Meanwhile, several US allies, including Argentina, stood by the United States.

On the situation in Venezuela, UN Secretary-General António Guterres said that the US actions did not comply with the rules of international law. He questioned what precedent the US military action could set for international relations. The Russian representative at the UN condemned the US action and demanded the immediate release of Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores.

Focus on Venezuelan Oil

Venezuela stated at the UN that the US attack was motivated by greed for the country's natural resources and oil. Besides Russia, Mexico and Cuba also strongly criticized the US action. Chile also criticized the US attack, calling it a dangerous precedent.

US allies such as Argentina, the UK, and Latvia justified the attack on Venezuela. The US military launched an attack early Saturday morning, capturing Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores. Both have been brought to New York. Maduro is facing trial on drug trafficking charges. However, Maduro has categorically denied the allegations against him.
