The rail network operator reported that the incident occurred in the town of Adamuz, near Cordoba, when a high-speed train traveling from Malaga to Madrid derailed and crashed into a train on an adjacent track.
Madrid: At least 21 people have died in a major train accident in Spain. The accident occurred on Sunday evening in southern Spain when two high-speed trains collided. Near Adamuz, a town close to Cordoba, a high-speed train traveling from Malaga to the capital Madrid derailed and collided with another train coming from Madrid to Huelva. Several carriages of both trains were severely damaged. Rescue workers arrived at the scene and began evacuating people.
Antonio Sanz, the health minister of the Andalusian province where the accident occurred, said that officials told him there were approximately 300 people on board the trains. He fears the death toll could rise beyond 21. He said that rescue operations are ongoing and 73 injured passengers have been taken to six different hospitals. Some of them are in serious condition.
Local Residents Join the Rescue Efforts
Regional civil protection chief Maria Belen Moya Rojas told Canal Sur that the accident occurred in a difficult-to-access area. This has made it challenging for authorities to provide assistance and extract people from the damaged carriages. However, the help of local residents has been a great relief.
