Trump renews push to acquire Greenland, raises tensions with Denmark

The former US president has again expressed interest in Greenland, a self-governing Danish territory, prompting concern in Copenhagen and among European allies.

Trump renews push to acquire Greenland, raises tensions with Denmark

New Delhi : The way US President Donald Trump has created turmoil across the world with his announcements, policies, and actions was unimaginable until recently. Naturally, there is a fierce debate going on about what impact his four-year term will have on the country's future and how he will ultimately be remembered in history.

It should be noted that Trump is not taking a single step without a plan and strategy. When he assumed the presidency on January 20, 2025, his statements were taken lightly by many analysts. He was ridiculed and mocked. Now, it seems to be generally accepted that his statements cannot be taken lightly.

    Greenland in the crosshairs

After the abduction of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife and their transfer to the US, everyone believes that Greenland becoming a part of the US is almost certain. If Trump makes Greenland a part of the US, it will give him dominance in the strategically important Arctic region, which is rich in rare minerals. It will become difficult for China and Russia to establish their dominance there.

    The thorn of Iran

He has weakened Iran to a great extent. If the Islamic regime of Ayatollah Khamenei is ended or weakened there, Trump will become immortal in American history. The pain of the attack on the American embassy in Iran in 1979, and the taking of employees hostage, still lingers in the US. Since then, all American presidents have called the Iranian Islamic regime evil and have spoken of ending it. Policy Shift

A historical truth is that the world's structure developed from the tension and balance between two opposing blocs led by the Soviet Union and the United States after World War II. Ronald Reagan and later George Bush Sr. were the US presidents when the Soviet Union and the communist regimes of Eastern Europe began to collapse.

George Bush faced the challenge of ideologically and structurally restructuring American policies, foreign relations, and the international order in light of this global upheaval. He and his successors refrained from making comprehensive changes. This led to increasing complexities in America's national life and its global role.

    A Powerful America

Now Trump has shown courage. This has created an atmosphere of turmoil, fear, uncertainty, and chaos in the world. The fact that most global institutions, including the United Nations, appear ineffective and irrelevant also makes it clear that the entire structure is not inherently stable.

Americans wanted to see their country as dominant. Trump has proven that only he has the power to fundamentally shake the current world order. All major countries of the world are forced to adapt their structures, from global and trade relations to strategic and internal security, to the new circumstances.

    The Need for NATO

American policy has been to maintain traditional relations with NATO countries. However, a large segment of the population believed that European countries did not support many American policies and even opposed them, despite relying on American military power for their security.

They also questioned the need for NATO when the Soviet Union and its military structure had ceased to exist. Trump is not dismantling NATO, but under his leadership, the US is moving towards ensuring that it operates according to its own terms.

    Emphasis on National Interest

However, there is no doubt that a large number of people in the US oppose President Donald Trump's stance and behavior. Nevertheless, it cannot be denied that he will be remembered as a leader who made the world aware of America's dominance and influence, made the country more secure economically and strategically, and paved the way for a US-centric world order. He will also be remembered for giving the world's nations the option to move beyond ideological considerations and pursue their national interests, thereby shaping their relationships accordingly.
