Trump-Zelensky Rift: A 6-Year-Old Feud Rooted in One Controversial Phone Call – Here’s the Full Story

Trump Zelensky News: There was a fight between the presidents of two countries in the Oval Office. The whole world saw this tussle. This happened for the first time in the history of America. The host insulted the guest a lot. Did not even feed him. On top of that, Trump reprimanded Zelensky a lot. The world saw what happened between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Friday. After this tussle, the peace agreement has gone sour. Relations between America and Ukraine have become bitter. There is a rift in the friendship between the two. However, the script of what the whole world saw in the Oval Office late Friday night is not new. The bitterness between the two has been there since 2019. This is not the first time that bitterness has been seen between the two. It started six years ago today. This was the year when Donald Trump had to face his first impeachment. Let's know that story.

Actually, US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met at the White House. During this, there was a heated debate between Trump, Vice President JD Vance and Zelensky. Vance accused Zelensky of insulting America. So Trump interrupted and reprimanded the Ukrainian President several times. Trump also accused Zelensky of gambling for the Third World War. After this, an angry Zelensky was seen walking out with fast steps. This was a recent thing. Now let's know about the old thing. The relationship between the two had deteriorated in July 2019 itself. Actually, the matter is such that Donald Trump made a phone call to Zelensky.

The story of that one phone call

Donald Trump had asked Zelensky to investigate possible corruption against former President Joe Biden and his son Hunter. Biden was then the strongest candidate of the Democratic Party against Trump in the 2020 election. Trump had stopped about $400 million in aid to Ukraine in the days before the call. However, he later released it. Trump's allegations were focused on Hunter Biden. According to him, since Hunter had no experience in the energy sector, he was still made the director of Ukrainian gas company Burisma. At that time Joe Biden was dealing with Ukraine as Vice President.

    Impeachment of Trump

Donald Trump also alleged that Biden had fired a prosecutor investigating Burisma. Following claims by a whistleblower, Democrats accused Trump of attempting to induce foreign interference in US elections and called it a case of abuse of office. Trump went through a rigorous impeachment trial, which resulted in his impeachment, but he was eventually acquitted in a Senate trial later. Trump then lost the US presidential election in 2020.

    Zelensky did not support

Zelensky got into trouble after Trump's phone call. He was trying his best to avoid getting caught in the dispute between Trump and Biden. Trump was upset that Zelensky did not strongly deny allegations that he was pressured or that there was a transaction. Zelensky forged a close relationship with Biden after he became president. Biden gave Ukraine aid and strong international political support. Biden singled out Russia and isolated it internationally, imposing economic sanctions on it.

    Zelensky was on Trump's radar

Republicans accused Zelensky of working closely with Biden during last year's election. A highly publicized visit to an ammunition factory in the highly controversial swing state of Pennsylvania (Biden's hometown of Scranton) was in the news. The distrust between Trump and Zelensky deepened. There was a consensus between the two parties on aid to Ukraine and opposition to Russia, but Trump began to question Kiev's ability to do so despite US support, causing a rift in the political field and Republicans either fell behind him or remained silent.

Zelensky, who is close to Putin, was upset

It got even worse when Trump directly contacted Russian President Vladimir Putin to find a solution to the war. Meanwhile, his anger came to the fore last month when Zelensky accused Trump of "living in a world of misinformation". This was a statement given after Trump's comment that Zelensky started a war with Russia and called him a 'dictator' (Zelensky). In a sign of the changed scenario, the US joined Russia in voting at the UN General Assembly against a resolution condemning Moscow's invasion of Ukraine. Senior US and Russian diplomats met in Riyadh last week to find a way to end the war without leaving Ukraine.

    Zelensky openly opposed

When it seemed that Russia and the US were going to reach an agreement to end the war and the future of Ukraine, Zelensky opposed it and said that his country would never accept an agreement of which it was not a part. This infuriated Trump, while European leaders like French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer tried to act as a bridge, but they were not very successful. At the center of the confrontation between him and Russian President Vladimir Putin is trust. Zelensky does not trust Putin. He fears that he will back out of any peace agreement. Despite the distrust of Putin among many of his Western allies, Trump said that he trusts Putin.
