US Eyes Myanmar Situation Closely, Trump Officials to Meet Bangladesh’s Interim Government

Washington: Three senior US officials are going to reach Dhaka on April 14. All three officials are associated with the US State Department. The purpose of their visit is to fulfill American political and military objectives in Myanmar. Myanmar is burning in the fire of civil war and the country is ruled by a military junta, which is controlled by Min Aung Hlaing. Hlaing is considered close to China. Due to this, Chinese dominance in Myanmar has increased significantly at present. On the other hand, the control of rebel groups is increasing in Rakhine province of Myanmar. Myanmar's Arakan Army is also ready to launch a campaign to take control of three major townships in this area.

These three US officials are going to Bangladesh

According to the Northeast News report, top sources in the Bangladesh government said that US Charge d'Affaires in Naypyidaw Susan Stevenson is already in Dhaka. She will be accompanied by Deputy Assistant Secretary for South and Central Asian Affairs Nicole N. Chulick and Deputy Assistant Secretary for East Asian and Pacific Affairs Andrew R. Herrup, who will arrive in Dhaka on April 14. Sources said the three key State Department officials will be in the Bangladeshi capital for a week.

Will meet Mohammad Yunus and Army Chief

He said they will meet key Bangladeshi public officials, including interim authority chief adviser Mohammad Yunus and Army Chief General Waqar-uz-Zaman, who will return home from their current visit to Russia on April 12. According to the report, the US objective is indeed political in nature and is targeted at Myanmar. This visit of US officials has little to do with the situation in Bangladesh.

Susan Stevenson is a senior official of the US State Department

Stevenson, Charge d'Affaires of the US Embassy in Myanmar, has previously served as Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary in the Bureau of Intelligence and Research (2021-2023), Ambassador to the Republic of Equatorial Guinea (2019-2021) and Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary in the Public Affairs Bureau (2016-2019), including serving as Acting Assistant Secretary from January 2017 to February 2018. Apart from this, she has also held the post of US Consul General in Chiang Mai, Thailand after serving in Beijing, Hong Kong, Mexico City and Bangkok.

Recently a senior US general visited Bangladesh

At the same time, Andrew R. Herrup, Deputy Assistant Secretary for East Asian and Pacific Affairs, became Deputy Assistant Secretary (DAS) in the Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs in September 2024. He previously served as interim Charge d'Affaires in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, from May to August 2024. His other overseas assignments include Thailand, Uganda, Vietnam and Malaysia. The visit of the three State Department officials was preceded by that of US Army Pacific Deputy Commander Lieutenant General Joel Vowell, who met General Zaman and Bangladesh Director General of Military Operations Brigadier General Alimul Amin during his two-day stay (March 24 and 25) in Dhaka.
