Brazil Held by Morocco in FIFA World Cup Opener Despite Vinícius Júnior Goal

New York: Five-time champions Brazil drew their first match of the FIFA World Cup 2026. Brazil faced Morocco in Group C, and the thrilling encounter ended in a 1-1 draw. Both teams displayed excellent gameplay, and the match remained exciting right until the end. Brazil's star player, Neymar Júnior, did not play as he was not fully fit. Both teams earned one point each from the draw; a winning team typically receives three points.

    Morocco scores the opener

Brazil faced a tough challenge from Morocco in this match. Both teams played aggressively from the very beginning. Morocco achieved the breakthrough in the 21st minute. A brilliant through-ball from Brahim Díaz played a crucial role in piercing Brazil's defense. Ismael Saibari latched onto the pass, surged forward, and outwitted goalkeeper Alisson to put the ball into the net.

    Vinícius Júnior strikes back

Brazil did not allow Morocco to hold the lead for long. In the 32nd minute, Brazil leveled the score at 1-1. Star player Vinícius Júnior scored by showcasing his exceptional skills off a fine pass from Bruno Guimarães. After receiving the ball on the left flank, he cut inside and unleashed a powerful right-footed shot into the goal. Vinícius's goal brought the score level at 1-1. Brazil had another chance to take the lead before halftime, but Bounou pulled off a brilliant save to deny Lucas Paquetá's excellent effort. Bounou made several crucial saves in the second half as well, keeping Morocco in the match. Both teams made numerous attempts to score but failed to find the back of the net.

Brazil's Long Wait for the Title

Brazil has been waiting 24 years for a FIFA World Cup title. The team last became champions in 2002 and has not reached the final since then. Meanwhile, Morocco surprised everyone by reaching the semi-finals of the Qatar FIFA World Cup. The team had won the Africa Cup of Nations title earlier that same year.
