Dubai: The International Cricket Council (ICC) has expressed serious concern over the recent decision by the Pakistani government instructing the Pakistan team not to participate in certain matches of the T20 World Cup 2026. The ICC issued an official statement clarifying that such a decision undermines the fundamental principles of a global sporting event. In its media release, the ICC stated that while they are still awaiting official communication from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), the situation of selective participation is difficult to accept. According to the ICC, global tournaments are organized on the basis that all eligible teams will compete on equal terms according to the scheduled fixtures. Boycotting selected matches is tantamount to compromising the integrity of the sport.
Pakistan cricket's future could be negatively impacted
The ICC has warned the PCB to consider the far-reaching and serious consequences of this decision. The statement said that this decision will affect the global cricket ecosystem, of which Pakistan itself is a member and beneficiary. The ICC expressed hope that the PCB will consider the interests of cricket in its country, as such steps will also harm the millions of cricket fans in Pakistan.
Seeking a solution
The ICC clarified that its priority is to ensure the successful conduct of the T20 World Cup 2026, and this is the responsibility of all ICC members, including the PCB. The council expects the PCB to find a mutually acceptable solution that protects the interests of the sport and all stakeholders. The ICC also reiterated that while they respect the role of governments in matters of national policy, this decision is not in the best interest of global cricket.
Crisis looms over PCB
The ICC's firm stance makes it clear that if Pakistan persists with its decision, it could face not only heavy financial penalties but also the risk of international isolation. The ICC's statement also indicates that strict disciplinary action could be taken against Pakistan in case of rule violations.
