Indian student Shivank Awasthi shot dead near Toronto university campus

Ottawa: An Indian student studying in Canada, Shivank Awasthi, has been shot dead. He was murdered in broad daylight near his university in Toronto. The Indian Consulate General expressed its condolences on Thursday, confirming the death of 20-year-old Indian doctoral student Shivank Awasthi in a shooting near the University of Toronto Scarborough campus. Toronto police said their team has launched an investigation and is trying to apprehend the attackers.

The Indian High Commission posted on X (formerly Twitter), "We are deeply saddened by the tragic death of young Indian doctoral student Shivank Awasthi in a tragic shooting incident near the University of Toronto Scarborough campus in Canada. The High Commission is in touch with the bereaved family during this difficult time and is providing all necessary assistance in coordination with local authorities."

    Police Statement

Toronto police said Shivank Awasthi was shot on Tuesday in the Highland Creek Trail Old Kingston Road area. Police officers arrived at the scene after being notified, but Shivank had already succumbed to his injuries. The attackers managed to escape before the police arrived. Police conducted a search operation in the area but were unsuccessful.

Shivank's murder has caused fear and anger among students at the University of Toronto Scarborough. A student posted on Reddit that Shivank Awasthi was a third-year Life Sciences student. The fact that he was shot inside the campus valley has raised concerns about security among students. Students say they now feel unsafe on campus.

Shivank Awasthi was a member of the University of Toronto Scarborough cheerleading team. Following his death, the team said, "We are deeply saddened and shocked by the sudden passing of our beloved Shivank Awasthi. We remember how he always encouraged and supported everyone during practice sessions with his positive attitude."
