Meta has done another round of layoffs this week, in which about 4,000 employees have been fired. This decision has shocked many employees, especially those who have lost their jobs despite good performance last year. This restructuring process of the company has created an atmosphere of confusion and resentment among the employees. According to a report by Business Insider, several employees revealed that they were given an "At or Above Expectations" rating in mid-2024. But when the review took place at the end of the year, their rating was changed to "Meets Most." Due to this, they came under the purview of layoffs.
Shock to 5% people
Meta had already instructed its managers to remove 5% of the company's weakest-performing employees. However, some internal documents revealed that if the target was not achieved by removing only the weak performers, then the managers were allowed to remove better-performing employees as well. This information was not shared with the employees, which came as a big shock to those who suddenly lost their jobs.
Employees' displeasure
A fired employee said, 'When I got the layoff email, I was shocked because my performance has been very good. There was no problem with my performance in the last six months.' Another employee also expressed the same concern that his manager had never indicated that his job was in danger. He said, 'I always got good performance feedback.'
An employee expressed displeasure and said, 'Meta is saying that they are only removing weak performers, but the truth is different. We were fired, but it doesn't mean we were bad employees.' Another employee said, 'I will challenge Meta's claim that they are only firing poor performers. Looking at my previous reviews, I was never on the list of poor performers.'
What is the company's plan?
This layoff by Meta is part of CEO Mark Zuckerberg's decision in which he wants to make the company's functionality better and more compact. The company is now investing more in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Virtual Reality (VR). For this reason, Meta wants to recruit machine learning engineers, but on the other hand, is limiting the number of its employees.
