    Pahalgam Attack: Terrorists Used Body Cameras—What Were They Trying to Record?

    The Pahalgam terrorist attack has shaken the entire country. Unarmed tourists were targeted. So far, information about the death of 27 people has come to light. Some media reports have claimed that some of the terrorists had installed body cameras. Body cameras were installed in helmets. Its purpose is not clear, but body cameras are usually used by government agencies to collect evidence. In such a situation, the question arises as to what the terrorists wanted to record by installing body cameras. Have they captured the entire incident and taken it with them?     What are body cameras?


    Body cameras are also called body worn cameras (BWC). They are used to record video and audio. Body cameras are very small in size. It is installed in such a place in the body, usually around the chest, so that the entire incident in front can be captured with audio. Body cameras have advanced with changing technology. They have started coming with HD video quality. They can capture things even at night and data encryption feature is also being given in them, so that no one else can access the data.


    How does a body camera work?


    The functioning of a body camera is very easy. It is attached to a helmet or uniform or clothes. After switching it on, it starts recording the surrounding incident and audio. These also have batteries. It depends on the model of the body camera how long it will record. Usually a body camera is capable of recording for 8 hours. The recording present in it can be easily transferred to another device such as a laptop.


    Latest features coming in body cameras

    Nowadays many latest features have started coming in body cameras. These have become quite advanced and high-tech. For example, HD video recording can now be done with body cameras. These support gimbal stabilization, that is, the movement will be captured in such a way that the frame does not shake. Starlight vision feature is coming in these, due to which the camera does good recording even at night. Intelligent scene selection facility is being provided. Apart from this, encryption is being given so that no one else can access the data stored in the camera. It is not yet known which model the body cameras installed by the terrorists of Pahalgam were and how high-tech they were.


    Who uses body cameras?

    There is no fixed standard for this. But body cameras are mostly used by people working in the police, fire brigade and ambulance services. They record audio-video during their duty. But recently their use has been seen in many terrorist incidents. It is said that last year when terrorists from Gaza targeted the people of Israel, videos were captured with the help of cameras. Some also used body cameras.
