New Delhi: Former Indian captain Rohit Sharma could not play a big innings in the second ODI match between India and New Zealand being played in Rajkot. Rohit Sharma did not look in form from the start of the match and struggled to score runs consistently. Rohit Sharma was caught out by Will Young off the bowling of Christian Clarke at a personal score of 24 runs. Rohit Sharma misjudged the full-length delivery and tried to hit it over the covers, only to be caught. Rohit played 38 balls for his 24 runs, which included 4 fours. Although Rohit Sharma could not play a big innings with the bat, he has surpassed former Indian captain Mohammad Azharuddin in the Indian record for most ODI runs against New Zealand.
Surpassed Ganguly in the previous ODI, now ahead of Azharuddin
Before the start of this series, Rohit Sharma was at number six in the list of Indians with the most ODI runs against New Zealand. During his innings of 26 runs in Vadodara, he surpassed former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly to reach the 5th position. Ganguly had scored 1079 runs in 32 ODI matches. After surpassing Ganguly, Rohit Sharma reached 1099 runs in 32 matches against New Zealand in the Vadodara ODI itself. On Wednesday, in the Rajkot ODI, he first surpassed Mohammad Azharuddin (1118 runs in 40 matches) and then took his tally to 1123 runs.
Can also surpass Sehwag in the next match
Rohit Sharma also has a chance to overtake Virender Sehwag in the list of Indian batsmen with the most ODI runs against New Zealand. He can achieve this feat in the next ODI match, which will be the last match of the series. Sehwag had scored 1157 runs against New Zealand in just 23 matches. If Rohit scores 35 runs in the next match, he will surpass Sehwag. Rohit will then move up to the third position on this list.
Kohli surpasses Sachin
In the list of Indians with the most runs against New Zealand, only Virat Kohli and Sachin Tendulkar are ahead of Rohit Sharma. Virat Kohli, with a short innings of 23 runs in the Rajkot ODI, surpassed Sachin Tendulkar to claim the top spot on this list. Sachin Tendulkar had scored 1750 runs in 42 matches, while Virat Kohli has now scored 1767 runs in 35 matches up to the Rajkot ODI.
