After the Trump administration postponed a ban on the social media app for weeks, TikTok was finally back on the Apple App Store and Google Play on Thursday night.
Previously, while existing users could access the app, it was not available for new downloads due to legal concerns. Android users could still download the app directly from the TikTok website earlier in the day.
On January 18, TikTok went dark for about 12 hours after the Supreme Court denied parent company ByteDance’s appeal, which argued that banning the app violated users’ free speech rights.
On January 20, Trump signed an executive order halting the enforcement of the TikTok ban for 75 days.
USA TODAY has reached out to Apple and Google for comments.
Why Did the US Government Want to Ban TikTok?
In April 2024, Congress passed a ban on TikTok over national security concerns in usa, fearing that ByteDance, TikTok’s Chinese-owned parent company, could pose a risk. Then-President Joe Biden signed the bill, requiring ByteDance to sell its U.S. operations for TikTok to continue in the country.
The ban also restricted the app’s distribution through Apple App Store and Google Play Store removed.
Trump suggested that Elon Musk (owner of X) or Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison could purchase TikTok to prevent the ban in usa. He even proposed a 50% stake for the U.S. government, saying:
"Let the United States of America own 50% of TikTok. We’re going to have a lot of bidders. The U.S. will enter a joint venture."
Is TikTok Here to Stay?
TikTok’s long-term future in the U.S. remains uncertain. ByteDance has 50 days (as of Friday) to finalize a deal to sell its U.S. assets. However, even if an agreement is reached, the app’s algorithm and terms of service may change significantly.
What Happened When Users Searched for TikTok?
🔹 On Google Play Store (Before Restoration):
- Users saw an unclickable TikTok icon with a message:
- “Downloads for this app are paused due to current U.S. legal requirements.”
🔹 On Apple App Store (Before Restoration):
- iPhone users saw a message:
- “TikTok and other ByteDance apps are not available in your country or region.”
- A “Learn More” button redirected users to an Apple support page explaining app availability in the U.S.
