Usman Khawaja announces retirement, alleges racial bias during Australia career

Khawaja said that throughout his career, he was often treated differently because of his Pakistani heritage and Muslim identity. He faced unfair criticism. Whenever he was injured, the media and some former players raised questions without having all the facts.

He further added, "You're often labelled as Pakistani, West Indian, or often selfish, not hardworking, and not caring about the team. I've dealt with all of this my entire life."

Khawaja said,

"When I was injured, I was criticized for five consecutive days. I was often portrayed as lazy, irresponsible, and not playing for the team. This is all part of racial stereotypes."

Questions Raised Over Playing Golf: Khawaja also mentioned the criticism he faced for playing golf before the Perth Test and not attending an optional training session. He said that some people blamed his injury on playing golf.

Khawaja said, "I can give dozens of examples where players play golf before a match and get injured, but no questions are raised. Many players drink 15 beers before a match, yet it's not an issue because they are called 'Australian larrikins'. When I got injured, my credibility was questioned."

Retirement Announcement with Family: Khawaja's wife Rachel, children, and other family members were present at the press conference during the retirement announcement. He said that he had been considering this decision for quite some time. Khawaja said, "When I joined this series, I had a feeling it might be my last. After a long conversation with my wife, I felt the time was right. I'm happy that I'm able to retire on my own terms at a ground like the SCG."

Khawaja also revealed that the team's head coach, Andrew McDonald, wanted him to continue playing. There were even discussions about the tour to India in 2027, but he decided to stick to his decision.

Being left out of the playing XI in Adelaide was a turning point. Khawaja admitted that the start of the Ashes wasn't easy for him. Not being included in the initial playing XI for the Adelaide Test was a big sign for him. He said, "When I wasn't selected in Adelaide, I understood that it was time to move on."

However, Khawaja got a chance in Adelaide after Steve Smith fell ill and played innings of 82 and 40 runs.

Khawaja clarified that he wasn't trying to force his way into the team. He had told the coach that he could retire immediately if the team wanted him to. He was bothered by being called selfish by some people, even though the team management itself wanted him to continue playing.

Cricket Australia said they will remember his contribution for a long time. Even after retiring from international cricket, Khawaja will not be completely away from the game. He will continue to play for Brisbane Heat in the Big Bash League. He is also expected to be available for Queensland in the Sheffield Shield.

Cricket Australia CEO Todd Greenberg said that Usman Khawaja has given a lot to Australian cricket, both on and off the field. His contribution will be remembered for a long time.
