New Delhi. Mystery spinner Varun Chakraborty, who played an important role in making the Indian cricket team champion in the Champions Trophy, has made a big disclosure. He told that after the poor performance in the 2021 T20 World Cup, he received threatening phone calls. His house was traced. He was even followed from the airport. This tournament took place in Dubai four years ago.
Chakraborty performed brilliantly for Kolkata Knight Riders in the 2020 and 2021 Indian Premier League seasons. He took 17 wickets in the first season and 18 in the second. The performance of the Virat Kohli-led Indian team was disappointing and they were eliminated in the first round itself. The team had to face defeat from teams like Pakistan and New Zealand and they could not make it to the knockouts.
This tournament was also forgettable for Chakraborty, as he played just three matches and did not take a single wicket. He revealed about the reaction of the fans after his campaign and told that he received threatening calls, was followed at the airport and his home address was also traced.
He told in a podcast with Gobinath on YouTube, "The 2021 World Cup was a dark time for me. I went into depression at that time. I came to the team with a lot of expectations, but could not take a single wicket. After this, I was not even considered for selection for three years." He further said, "After the 2021 T20 World Cup, I started getting threatening calls even before I landed in India. They said that if I try to come to India, I will not be able to come. They also traced my home address and things like that. While coming from the airport, I saw people chasing me on bikes. But I understand fans are very passionate,”
But since then, Chakravarthy has proven himself with strong performances in the last two seasons of the IPL and in the domestic circuit. This led to a comeback in Team India. Along with his impressive performance in T20Is, the Indian team also selected him for the Champions Trophy in the 50-over format where he also performed well. Playing just three matches, he became the joint second-highest wicket-taker in the tournament with 9 wickets and led India to their third title.
