In the first match of the series at the BCA Stadium in Vadodara, the Indian team, chasing a target of 301 runs set by New Zealand, suffered its second setback with the dismissal of Shubman Gill, who was out after scoring a half-century. Kohli is currently at the crease, having also scored a half-century. Kohli has broken Sachin Tendulkar's world record for the fastest 28,000 international runs. He has also surpassed Kumar Sangakkara in the list of batsmen with the most runs in international cricket. Earlier, Rohit Sharma returned after scoring 26 runs. During his innings, Rohit hit two sixes, becoming the first batsman to hit 650 sixes in international cricket.

Earlier, New Zealand won the toss and elected to bat first, scoring 300 runs for the loss of 8 wickets in 50 overs, setting India a target of 301 runs for victory. The Kiwi captain won the toss and elected to bat, a decision justified by the opening pair of Devon Conway and Henry Nicholls, who put on a century partnership for the first wicket. However, after Harshit Rana broke the partnership, New Zealand's wickets began to fall at regular intervals. Despite this, Daryl Mitchell held one end and, through a series of small partnerships, guided New Zealand's score past 250. Daryl Mitchell was dismissed in the 47th over, and New Zealand ultimately failed to reach the 300-run mark. Daryl Mitchell scored 84 runs off 71 balls, while Henry Nicholls contributed 62 and Devon Conway 56. For India, Harshit Rana, Prasidh Krishna, and Mohammed Siraj each claimed two wickets.
