104 Indians Deported by Trump: Punjab Police Takes Custody – What’s Next?

Amritsar. 104 Indians living illegally in America have returned home. On Wednesday, after the order of US President Donald Trump, US military aircraft US C17 landed in Amritsar, Punjab with 104 Indians. The plane had sought permission to land from Amritsar Airport Authority, after which it was permitted to land. As soon as 104 Indians landed, the question was raised as to what would happen to them. Will they be sent to jail or will they be released?

There were 104 Indians on board the US military aircraft C-17 that landed in Amritsar, Punjab, including 79 men and 25 women. 33 people from Gujarat, 33 from Haryana, 30 from Punjab, 3 from Maharashtra, 3 from Uttar Prades,h and 2 from Chandigarh have returned in this plane coming from America. The US C-17 military aircraft left for India from Texas on Tuesday carrying illegal immigrants.

What will happen to the people who have returned to India?

According to the airport authority, verification of these people is being done. After clearance from immigration and customs, they have been handed over to the Punjab Police. It is being told that the people who have returned to India will first be questioned. Like how did they go from India to Ameri? a. Who helped them to reach America illegally? Punjab Police will check the background (whether they have any criminal history) of all these Indians who have returned to India. It is being told that buses have come to pick up the Indians who have come from America. People living in the vicinity i.e. Haryana and Himachal will be sent to their homes by bus. On the other hand, people living in Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh will be sent home by special flights.

Why were Indians sent to India?

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Trump had a detailed discussion on the phone on January 27. Illegal Indian immigrants have been sent back to their homeland before Prime Minister Modi's upcoming Washington visit on February 13-14. After the phone conversation on January 27, the US President said that India would do 'whatever is right' on the issue of deportation of illegal immigrants. Earlier, External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar had said that New Delhi is ready for the 'legal return' of Indian citizens living 'illegally' abroad including in America.

It is worth noting that this is the first action taken by Washington against illegal Indian immigrants after Donald Trump assumed the presidency last month. Trump had decided to end birthright citizenship and deploy troops on the US-Mexico border within hours of taking office for the second time. The US President has vowed to crack down on illegal immigration, which has also been a major issue of his presidential election campaign. Due to this, similar deportation flights carrying illegal immigrants also departed for Guatemala, Peru, Honduras, and other countries from January 24.
