Why were Indians sent to India?
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Trump had a detailed discussion on the phone on January 27. Illegal Indian immigrants have been sent back to their homeland before Prime Minister Modi's upcoming Washington visit on February 13-14. After the phone conversation on January 27, the US President said that India would do 'whatever is right' on the issue of deportation of illegal immigrants. Earlier, External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar had said that New Delhi is ready for the 'legal return' of Indian citizens living 'illegally' abroad including in America.
It is worth noting that this is the first action taken by Washington against illegal Indian immigrants after Donald Trump assumed the presidency last month. Trump had decided to end birthright citizenship and deploy troops on the US-Mexico border within hours of taking office for the second time. The US President has vowed to crack down on illegal immigration, which has also been a major issue of his presidential election campaign. Due to this, similar deportation flights carrying illegal immigrants also departed for Guatemala, Peru, Honduras, and other countries from January 24.
