A source familiar with the matter said that the Baglihar hydroelectric dam in Ramban, Jammu and the Kishanganga hydroelectric dam in North Kashmir give India the ability to regulate the timing of water release.
Two decade old treaty suspended
India decided to suspend the decades-old treaty after the terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. 26 people were killed in this attack, most of whom were tourists. The Indus Water Treaty, brokered by the World Bank, has governed the use of the Indus River and its tributaries between India and Pakistan since 1960.
Baglihar Dam in dispute for a long time
The Baglihar Dam has been a matter of dispute between the two neighbors for a long time. Pakistan has sought the mediation of the World Bank in this matter. Pakistan also has objections to the Kishanganga Dam, especially due to its impact on Neelam, a tributary of Jhelum. Earlier, there has been a stir in Delhi regarding action against Pakistan.
