Chamoli, Uttarakhand: Relief and rescue operations are in full swing after the devastation caused by the glacier burst in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. By this evening, rescue teams have safely evacuated 32 workers trapped in the avalanche. However, many people are still missing, whose search is on.
Rescue operation to resume tomorrow
The teams engaged in the rescue operation are currently halting the operation due to heavy snowfall and bad weather. According to officials, the rescue operation will resume tomorrow morning. Teams of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and Army are engaged in relief work.
How did the incident happen?
A glacier suddenly broke in Joshimath area of Chamoli district on Thursday morning, causing heavy icy rocks and debris to flow down. Many laborers and local people were affected in this incident. Nearby villages have been put on alert due to rising water level.
Prime Minister and Chief Minister took cognizance
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami are constantly monitoring the situation. He has given instructions to expedite relief and rescue work. The government has advised the local people to move to safer places.
Appeal of local administration
The administration has appealed to the people not to pay heed to rumors and stay in safe places. According to the Meteorological Department, more snowfall is expected in the area in the next few days, which may worsen the situation.
