Washington: US President Donald Trump has escalated global trade tensions by announcing a 25% tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico. Countries like China, India, Canada, and Mexico are on Donald Trump's target. While addressing the US Parliament, Trump has also mentioned India and talked about imposing reciprocal tariffs. From next month, America’s reciprocal tariff system will start on India, meaning that whatever tariff India imposes on American goods, the US will impose the same on Indian goods.
Trump has already announced tariffs against China, and China has retaliated by imposing tariffs of 10-15% on various American agricultural imports. These new tariffs will come into effect next week.
Canada and EU Prepare to Retaliate
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced retaliatory tariffs on the US. Trudeau has stated that Canada will impose a 25% tariff on US goods worth $30 billion CAD from Tuesday, while additional tariffs on $125 billion CAD will follow in 21 days.
Apart from this, Donald Trump is also planning to impose tariffs against the European Union. Trump said last week that he is considering a 25% tariff on EU-manufactured goods. Overall, Trump has made it clear that companies wanting to avoid tariffs should shift their manufacturing to the US.
Warren Buffett Calls Trump’s Tariff Moves a "Trade War"
Reacting to Trump’s decisions, renowned investor Warren Buffett has called these tariffs "somewhat of an act of war." He warned that this could trigger a global trade war, affecting global economic growth and raising business costs.
Countries from China to Canada have reacted strongly to Trump’s tariffs, but India has remained silent. Despite Trump already imposing a 25% tariff on Indian steel and aluminum imports, India has not shown a strong response.
How Will India Be Affected?
According to a report in the Economic Times, India will not remain unaffected for long. When reciprocal tariffs take effect in April, India will be directly caught in the trade war. Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had already agreed on reciprocal tariffs in their last meeting.
India’s Strategy to Avoid a Trade War
A Bloomberg report states that Indian officials are exploring ways to reduce tariffs on certain US imports to prevent trade tensions from escalating. Sectors where tariff reductions are being considered include:

What’s at Stake for India?
Experts believe that while India won’t suffer immediate consequences, Trump’s broader trade war could hurt the global economy, indirectly impacting India.
