Hyderabad Matches Mumbai, But Why Is It No Cause for Celebration? This Report Raises Serious Concerns

New Delhi: The population density of Hyderabad has now exceeded that of Delhi. According to Telangana state data, 18,161 people live per square kilometer in Hyderabad, whereas this number is 11,313 in Delhi.

On a global scale, Manila in the Philippines is the most densely populated city, where 43,079 people live per square kilometer. In India, Mumbai has the highest population density, with 28,508 people per square kilometer.

Hyderabad’s Growing Population and Infrastructure Pressure

The parliamentary constituency of Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi is witnessing rapid growth. On one hand, job opportunities and development are increasing, but on the other, the pressure on infrastructure, resources, and housing is also rising.

The need for essential services, transportation, and infrastructure has increased along with the population. Hyderabad is still a top destination for professionals, students, and entrepreneurs due to its thriving IT sector, vibrant culture, and historical significance.

Why is Telangana’s Overall Population Share Decreasing?

Despite Hyderabad's growth, a different trend is visible in Telangana as a whole. Between 2011 and 2031, the state's share in India's total population is projected to decline by 0.23%.

By 2031, the young population (below 39 years of age) in Telangana will decrease, while the number of elderly people (above 40 years) will increase significantly. The 80+ age group is expected to rise by 80%, leading to a growing senior citizen population in the state.

    Telangana’s Population Overview

    • Total Population: 3.5 crores (35 million)
    • Geographical Area: 1,12,077 square kilometers
    • Population Density: 312 people per square kilometer (lower compared to states like Bihar and West Bengal)
    • Expected Population by 2031: 3.92 crores

While Hyderabad is seeing high population density, the rest of Telangana remains relatively less populated.

    Young Population on the Decline

    • It is anticipated that the number of children under five will decrease by 25%.
    • There could be a 60% increase in the population over 60.

A decrease in the younger population may result in less government financing for development projects, which could have an effect on Telangana's economy and policy.

    Census Information and Social Make-Up

Telangana has a population of 3.5 crore, according to a recent survey, although almost 16 lakh persons were left out.

    • Scheduled Caste Population: 54.09 lakh (15.5%)
    • Scheduled Tribe Population: 31.77 lakh (9.1%)

With Hyderabad’s rising population density and the state’s shifting demographics, Telangana faces both opportunities and challenges in the coming years.
