Odisha’s Swastik Samal hits double century in Vijay Hazare Trophy match

Odisha batsman Swastik Samal played a brilliant innings of 212 runs off 169 balls against Saurashtra in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. He achieved this feat in Alur. With this double century, Samal became the first batsman from Odisha to achieve this milestone in the history of List A cricket. This is also the fifth-highest score in the history of the Vijay Hazare Trophy, surpassing the 203 runs scored by Yashasvi Jaiswal while playing for Mumbai in 2019. Thanks to Samal's excellent innings, Odisha scored 345 runs for 6 wickets in 50 overs against Saurashtra.

    Undrafted in the IPL Auction

Swastik Samal, along with his teammate Rajesh Mohanty, was included in the IPL 2026 auction, but he was not bought by any team. The 25-year-old Samal opened the innings for Odisha and gave his team a good start. However, after the dismissals of Om, Sandeep Patnaik, and Govind Poddar, Odisha was in trouble, losing three wickets for 59 runs in 11.5 overs.

Rescued the innings with Biplab Samantray

Samal then had to rebuild the innings with captain Biplab Samantray. This meant he had to bat till the end. In this partnership, both batsmen added 261 runs off 211 balls, with Samantray completing his century and Samal contributing 156 runs to the partnership. Samal was dismissed on the fourth ball of the last over, but by then he had guided his team to a massive score. Samal's innings included 21 fours and 8 sixes. This was his 14th List A match for Odisha, and he became the 14th Indian player to score a double century in List A cricket.

    Vijay Hazare Records

In terms of the highest scores in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, N Jagadeesan tops the list with 277 (141 balls), a score he achieved against Arunachal Pradesh on November 21, 2022. This is followed by Prithvi Shaw's 227 (152 balls), scored against Puducherry on February 25, 2021. Ruturaj Gaikwad scored 220 (159 balls) against Uttar Pradesh on November 28, 2022. Sanju Samson scored 212 (129 balls) against Goa on October 12, 2019. Now, Swastik Samal joins this list with his score of 212 (169 balls) against Saurashtra on December 24, 2025.
