New Delhi: A major uproar has erupted after the Delhi High Court suspended the life sentence of former MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar. While several people, including the Unnao rape victim, are protesting against the High Court's decision, a woman has now come out in support of Kuldeep Sengar, just a day before the Supreme Court hears the CBI's petition. At Jantar Mantar, she held a placard saying, "I support Kuldeep Sengar."
The controversy surrounding the Kuldeep Sengar case continues to escalate. On Sunday, while several people were protesting against the Delhi High Court's decision at Jantar Mantar, members of a men's rights group also came out in support of the former MLA, holding placards. Clashes between the two groups continued for a considerable time.
Demoralizing for the victim...: Yogita Bhayana
Regarding the matter, women's rights activist Yogita Bhayana said, "Only one woman has come forward. I think she is not mentally sound. She needs medication. She will be the first and last woman to support Kuldeep Singh Sengar. We are not talking without evidence. He is a convicted rapist. He has already been sentenced. We are protesting against the bail granted to him. Imagine how demoralizing this must be for the victim."
She wrote on social media platform X, "'I support Kuldeep Sengar'—a placard and a woman holding it, what more is there to see?" Demand to overturn the verdict
Yogita Bhayana commented on the 2017 Unnao rape case, "We want the hearing in Kuldeep Singh Sengar's case to be dismissed. This girl wanted to come here, so we have come here in her support. This girl's legal battle has not been fought properly."
RJD accuses BJP
Meanwhile, RJD national spokesperson Kanchana Yadav accused the BJP, saying, "The BJP's character is to protect rapists. BJP leaders and workers are protesting in Delhi in support of rapist Kuldeep Singh Sengar. They have written, 'I support Kuldeep Singh Sengar'."
The RJD spokesperson wrote on X: "Hopefully, the people of this country are watching and understanding this. Those who supported the BJP after hearing the slogan 'Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao' (Save the Daughter, Educate the Daughter), especially, should think about who they need to save their daughters from."
Supreme Court to hear the case tomorrow
A three-judge vacation bench of Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Justices J.K. Maheshwari and Augustine George Masih will hear the CBI's petition against the Delhi High Court's decision to suspend Kuldeep Sengar's sentence on December 29.
What is the case?
The Delhi High Court suspended the life sentence of Sengar, who is serving a life sentence in the Unnao rape case, on December 23. The court said that he has already spent seven years and five months in jail. The High Court stayed Sengar's sentence until his appeal against the conviction and sentence in the rape case is pending. Sengar had challenged the lower court's decision of December 2019. However, he will remain in jail as he is also serving a 10-year sentence in the case of the custodial death of the victim's father, and he has not received bail in that case.
