PM Modi Dedicates ₹8,900 Cr Vizhinjam Deepwater Port to Nation—Big Boost for Kerala's Economy

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday gave a gift of Rs 8,900 crores to the people of Kerala. During this, he dedicated the 'Vizhinjam International Deepwater Multipurpose Seaport' built at a cost of thousands of crores to the nation. During this, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan was also present. This ambitious project of the Kerala government has been developed by Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Limited (APSEZ) under public-private partnership.

While addressing the people, PM Modi said that the world's big cargo ships will be able to come here easily. Till now 75% of India's transshipment used to happen at ports outside the country, due to which a huge loss has been incurred. This situation is going to change now. Now the country's money will be useful for the country. The money which used to go out, will now bring new opportunities for the people of Kerala and Vizhinjam.

Earlier, he said that today is the birth anniversary of Lord Adi Shankaracharya. Three years ago in September, I had the privilege of visiting his birthplace area. Adi Shankaracharya ji awakened the consciousness of the nation by setting up monasteries in different corners of the country from Kerala. I salute him on this auspicious occasion.

Also mentioned the period before slavery

He said that before slavery, our India has seen thousands of years of prosperity. At one time, India used to have a major share in the global GDP. What made us different from other countries in that era was maritime capability, the economic activity of our port city. Kerala had a big contribution in this.

Priority to development and ease of doing business

PM Modi further said that the full potential of the port economy is realized when infrastructure development and ease of doing business are prioritized and promoted. This approach has been the basis of the government's port and waterways policies over the past decade. Significant progress has been made in promoting industrial activities and furthering the overall development of the state.

Wore a hard hat and toured the transshipment hub

Earlier, the Prime Minister reached the port area by helicopter from Thiruvananthapuram city. Wearing a hard hat, he took a round of the transshipment hub. Later, he formally launched the first phase of the facility in the presence of Kerala Governor Rajendra Arlekar, Vijayan, Gautam Adani and Tharoor.
